Weekend Getaway #3 of 3: Take Every Friday Off (80 - 90% pay)
This final Weekend Getaway time off tactic is a straight shortened workweek: • Work 32 hours a week • Monday through Thursday • 8 hours a day At first glance, you might think a straight pro-ration of 80% pay (i.e., 20% pay reduction) is what you will put forth in your proposal for this reduced workweek schedule. But I encourage you to see the full 20% pay pro-ration as your back-up negotiating position. Aim for a 20% reduction in time, but go for a smaller percentage in pay reduction. How? You could use the pay raise/time trade-off outlined in Weekend Getaway #1, but instead... ...if you have a clear understanding of your value as a seasoned career professional, use that negotiating leverage to get the terms you want. When I was in my early 40's and still conventionally employed as a registered dietitian, I negotiated a four day workweek with only a 5% pay cut. What were the factors in my favor and how might you adapt them to your situation? Find out by reading this article on my WorkOptions.com site. There's a lot of room for negotiation when you're dealing with a 20% figure. So set an ambitious goal and use the straight 20% cut as a last resort. If you decide to go the pay raise/time trade-off route instead, the figure will be less than 20% because of the pay raise factor. Remember, I've provided suggested scripts for you to adapt to open the discussion for trading a pay raise for more time off.
